Spring Refresh : Happier and Healthier This Season

Hi Friends! Happy Tuesday! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and it’s 66 degrees today. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than perfect Spring days like today!

My favorite thing about Spring is that it feels like an opportunity for a fresh start. I know that everyone thinks the new year is the best time to make goals for yourself and keep up with them. (Especially health/fitness goals.) But for me, it’s SO HARD in January. Why? Because of Michigan Winters.

When it’s cold, grey and blustery, all I want to do is be cozy inside. I want my blankets and my Netflix served up with a side of cozying up by the fire and hot chocolate. I don’t want to think of healthy smoothies, eating vegetables and (god forbid) working out every.single.day.

But when the snow starts melting and the trees start budding, my entire mood shifts. I want to be outside as much as possible. I want to eat all the “fresh” and “in season” things. And I want to feel all the sunshine on my face because it makes me happier. I call it my Spring Refresh because without a doubt, I do this every single year.

This year however, I’m even more inspired to be a better version of myself, because last year was not great for me. (Or anyone really.) I spent all of last year inside, feeling all my feelings and being worried about the state of the world. So this Spring, I’ve been working hard already to be a better, happier and healthier version of myself! And I figured I’d share what I’m doing in case you’re wanting a little “Spring Refresh” in your life too. Because if you can refresh your wardrobe/house… why not refresh yourself?

Things I’m Doing To Be Happier and Healthier This Spring

First off… I’m Moving Every Day! Whether it’s a full blown work out with weights, cardio or taking a walk around the block, I’m trying to get outside and get moving. It’s SO much easier for me to exercise when I can be outside. Especially after a long day at work. A little fresh air makes all my worries melt away. This year I decided to take up something that is very uncharacteristic of me… I decided to start running! If you know me personally I’m sure you’re very very very confused by this statement. 😂 Don’t worry… my friends and family were too. Two weeks ago we had an uncharacteristically warm March day. It was sunny and I just wanted to get outside and run away from all my stress and anxiety. So I grabbed some head phones and I did 🤷🏽‍♀️ I think Trev almost fell over when he got home and I told him I went for a run. Haha I’m slow… and am only running/walking a mile right now. But every day I run a little more and walk a little less. Which I’m super proud of! I also bought a weighted hula hoop. (#TiktokMadeMeBuyIt) It’s going to be here tomorrow and I can’t wait to try it out! Hula hooping has always been my jam! It doesn’t really matter to me what I’m doing. I’m not trying to stick to a strict workout routine. I’m just trying to make sure I get myself moving every day… and I’m trying to make sure I’m having fun doing it.

Next, I’m Eating in Season. This month Trev and I took a look at our favorite things to cook and tried to modify them to be a little bit healthier and use fresh foods that are “in season”.  We also did away with all those winter comfort foods that just feel heavy in your belly when you eat them. Step one in our grand plan was to buy an air fryer. When I say it’s changed our lives, I’m not even joking! Everything cooks SO easily in it and it tastes just as good (if not better) than when we fried stuff up in oil on the stove. We have this one, and we love it so much! (It’s on sale right now too!) We’ve also been making sure we eat a lot of fruits and veggies. We’ve been trying to “eat the rainbow” like Darin Olien says. To help us get more fruits and veggies in every day, Trev’s been making us smoothies every morning for breakfast! They’re super simple and super delicious! I like mine served best in my Lizzie McGuire cup because let’s be honest, it’s what Smoothie dreams are made of 🙂

Hey Now. Hey Now. This is what (smoothie) dreamssssss are made of.

This week we’ve been throwing a handful of frozen strawberries, a handful of frozen blueberries, a broken up banana, one scoop of protein powder (we like this one), and some vanilla almond milk in our blender and blending it up! It’s so yummy!

And lastly, I’m trying to be happier! I’m trying to meditate more and get myself into a better headspace. I talked about this in January, and it was one of my New Years Resolutions. I’m happy to report that I finished a course on my Headspace app and It really has helped me. On days when my brain hates me and my anxiety and worries feel like too much, I can practice different techniques I learned throughout my course to help remind me that most of what I’m thinking about is just that… a thought. The weather changing has also helped my moods immensely. It’s so much easier to be happier when the sun out! During the winter I was sitting by my sun lamp every day, but I haven’t had to use it since I’ve been outside getting the real deal the past couple of weeks! I’ve always been trying to do more things I enjoy. Like designing spaces in our home (I’m busy trying to create a patio space we will love right now), reading (I’m on my 12th book of the year!) and dancing around the house to TSwift. (Anyone else completely pumped for Fearless (Taylor’s Version)?! I can’t wait to feel all the feelings again like in high school but this time as an adult… with wine.)

Plus… all this extra time outside and moving helps me to fall asleep easier and rest better every night!

So my loves, are you doing anything to be happier and healthier this Spring? Leave it in the comments below!

I’m off to do some dishes and then snuggle in for the night. I hope you all have a great rest of your evening!
