Weekend-ish Round Up

Eeek! You guys! I’m SO excited to be here today FINALLY talking about our vacation. I’ve been dreaming of writing this post for MONTHS. (Dramatic. I know.) And while we didn’t get to have the vacation I wanted (you can see why here) we did still manage to have some fun and see just how beautiful Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are!

Ever since I started reading Elin Hilderbrand 4 summers ago, I’ve been day dreaming of sunny days on Nantucket. I was dying to walk the bluff walk in ‘Sconset, eat ice cream from The Juice Bar, and lay out on the Jetties.

So when my parents asked where I wanted to go for my 30th Birthday trip, Nantucket was the only option! However, I’d also always wanted to see Martha’s Vineyard. So we decided to try the impossible (I didn’t know it was impossible then) and see both of the islands in just a few days.

You’ll be getting an entire travel series on both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard starting next week! I’ll be sharing my tips and tricks to finding affordable rentals (neither of these islands are cheap), where to eat, what to do and ultimately, which is the better island. But for today, I’m going to share a little weekend round up with you (super late!) so you can get a little taste of what these two islands have to offer!

Our trip began last Wednesday when I got out of work. We decided to drive from Michigan… so it was 12 very long hours in the car! We have never minded long car trips (like our drive to Jackson Hole) and did this one through the night.

We arrived in Woods Hole at 6 am… just in time to catch the Steamship Authority to Martha’s Vineyard! We actually got to sneak on the 6:30 ferry, even though we weren’t scheduled until 7:00! (If the boats aren’t full, they let you load on!)

Before we knew it, we were surrounded by the salty sea are and docking in Oak Bluffs! Our first stop was for breakfast at Mocha Mott’s in Vineyard Haven. I wish I had been feeling better because this was HANDS DOWN the best coffee I have had in awhile!

After breakfast we snuggled into the car and headed for a trip Up Island. I’ll be sharing an entire itinerary with you later on, but a few standouts that we saw were the Gayhead Lighthouse, Aquinnah Cliffs, Menemsha, Larsens Fish Market and the Chilmark General Store.

It was on our trip Up Island that I passed out the first time… so I spent the rest of the afternoon napping in the car!

At 4:00 we were able to check in to our rental and I PTFO for the night. That night, was when I fainted for the second time and had to go in the ambulance to the hospital. We were there until the next morning, so my dad stepped out to change our ferry so we didn’t have to miss out on Nantucket!

Once we left the hospital, we headed back to our cottage and everyone slept! (My family stayed up with me the entire night. They really are the sweetest!) Once we were all rested, we drove to Edgartown for lunch and a little bit of shopping! (Sorry I look so sickly in these photos! You’ll have to cut me some slack, I spent the night in the ER. HA)

Lunch on the deck at Seafood Shanty
Trev had a lobster quesadilla!
Lunch views.
The best part of Edgartown was all the benches they had! I was able to sit and rest whenever I felt too tired.

Unfortunately, this proved to be a TASK for me, so after we got a few souvenirs we headed back to the cottage and turned in for the evening. (I wanted to go see the sunset SO bad but I slept through it.)

Saturday we woke up and I was feeling a little bit better. So we hopped on the ferry and headed to Nantucket! And guys. I’m telling you right now, Nantucket was everything I was hoping for and more. Plus, I’m pretty sure the air there is MAGIC because I was feeling even better as the day went on.

My favorite tourist.

As soon as we got to town we hopped on a bus and headed out to ‘Sconset. I had hoped to do the bluff walk out to Sankaty Lighthouse, but I wasn’t feeling up to such a long walk. So we compromised and walked a little bit of the bluff walk before catching the bus back to town.

‘Sconset
Someday we’ll live in one of these houses. Someday.

We grabbed lunch downtown and then went shopping for some more souvenirs. Then, we made our way to The Juice Bar to grab some ice cream before getting back on the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard.

Downtown Nantucket!
Had to stop by Murray’s!
In line for ice cream!

I slept most of the ferry right back and was feeling better than I had all weekend! So we decided to grab dinner while we were out. I had a list of places we wanted to try while were there, but we had only gotten to eat at one since I was so sick! We ended up choosing the closest to us… Offshore Ale Co. It was SO YUMMY.

We were hoping to be done with dinner in time to catch the sunset but we didn’t quite make it! At least we got to see the beautiful sky on our way home!

When we got back we packed up so we would be ready to head out early the next morning. We were on the 6:30 ferry back to Woods Hole. This ferry was different than all the others and didn’t have a place to get out and sit. So we stayed in the car and rested. I ended up falling asleep, and when I woke up…

WE WERE IN FOXBOROUGH!!!

I was SO excited to see Tom Brady and The Patriots at Training Camp! I never thought I’d make it to Gillette and was SO EXCITED we were able to stop on the way home! Because I still wasn’t feeling like my normal self, we only stayed an hour, but it was the best hour ever!!

Not only did we get to see TB12, but we got to do a ton of really fun interactives they had set up all around the stadium.

Before we knew it, we were heading back to Michigan. It was a long drive, but we stopped a lot and stretched!

While it wasn’t the vacation we planned, we still had some fun! And I’m really excited to share all the places we visited with you! Be on the lookout next Tuesday for the first post in this travel series… where I’m going to compare these two islands and tell you which one reigns superior!

Alright my loves, it’s late and I’m so sleepy! We’re heading to see Trev’s family this weekend. We have family photos and we’re taking his dad to a concert on Sunday night! (BTW, no new post on Sunday!)

I’ll be back on Monday. I hope you all have the best weekend!

Xx.

  1. Such a bummer that you got sick during your trip, but it looks like you made the best of it! It all looks so gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to visit New England (no specific place, all of it really lol). Hopefully you will get to go back and visit one day and do all the things you didn’t get to do this time ❤

    1. Thank you so much! They ended up diagnosing me with dehydration and exhaustion. Definitely learned that I need to step back and take some time for myself this summer. Because I never want to miss out in a fun vacation because I was pulling myself in too many different directions again!
